Author’s Note
Not every poem needs to be profound. Sometimes, I just want to have a little fun with an idea and see where it takes me.
This one started with a simple thought: what would happen if I could do the fusion dance with a younger version of myself? Take some of that old curiosity, the appetite for languages, and the wonderfully reckless energy I used to bring to writing, then combine it with the person I’ve become.
Of course, this is where the Dragon Ball reference comes in. A little old school, a little new school, and hopefully a better overall result.
There’s also a bit of self-deprecating humor here. My younger mind could produce plenty of ammunition, but accuracy wasn’t exactly part of the package. I had plenty to say, and apparently everyone was catching strays. These days, I’d like to think I’ve developed a little more control over where I aim my words.
And naturally, I couldn’t resist bringing Stephen Curry into it. If you’re going to compare your writing to basketball, you might as well go for the three-pointer.
There’s no grand philosophical revelation hiding underneath this one. No secret metaphor that needs decoding. Just a little nostalgia, a little pop-culture appreciation, some wordplay, and a reminder that writing should be fun, too.
Sometimes, a poem is just a poem.
And sometimes, you just can’t miss.

The Fusion I Never Got
Poetry by Rowan Evans
I wish I could go back
and do the fusion dance
with a younger me—
become a little more myself,
a little new school and a little bit
the old me, from back when—
I would gobble up languages,
and my mind was a little more dangerous—
I could take the danger and write,
but I couldn’t aim the shit—
so I was poppin’ off aimless.
Everybody was getting hit—
I couldn’t aim, but I couldn’t miss.
Every line was Curry from range—swish.
