Tag: being there for someone

Sometimes someone changes your life without ever physically being part of it.

Until the Ghost Becomes You explores the lasting influence another person can have on us, even when distance means we’ve never shared the same room. The ghost in this poem isn’t the person themselves, nor is it a haunting born from loss or abandonment. It’s the presence of their influence—the ideas, perspectives, and quiet lessons that remain with the speaker long after a conversation has ended.

There’s something fascinating about realizing that knowing someone has changed the way you look at the world. Sometimes, we’re so accustomed to looking inward, focusing on the familiar spaces immediately surrounding us, that we forget how much exists beyond them. Then someone comes along and helps us look outward. Not because they demand it, but because their own existence gives us another perspective to consider.

That’s what this poem is about for me.

It’s about recognizing the ways another person can expand your understanding of the world, encourage you to become more thoughtful, and inspire you to show up differently. Not through pressure, expectation, or obligation, but through the simple experience of knowing them.

There’s also an important distinction between wanting to become better because someone expects it and wanting to become better because you want to be there for them. The latter isn’t about changing yourself to earn someone’s affection. It’s about recognizing the kind of presence you would like to offer another person: someone they can trust, someone who listens, someone who makes the weight of the world feel a little less heavy.

The empty room and flickering candle give that influence somewhere to exist. The person hasn’t physically occupied the space, but the things they’ve helped change within the speaker have. In that sense, the room isn’t entirely empty. It’s full of everything the speaker has learned, reconsidered, and carried forward.

And then there’s the promise at the end.

The hope isn’t to remain haunted by someone’s influence forever. It’s to eventually share a space where that influence no longer needs to stand in for their physical presence. To exchange imagination for reality, distance for closeness, and the ghost of a shared experience for the possibility of actually sharing one.

    Until then, the influence remains.

Sometimes people become part of our lives long before they become part of our physical surroundings. And sometimes, that’s enough to change the direction in which we look.

A solitary figure sits beside a flickering candle in an empty room, facing a chair surrounded by golden light representing the unseen influence of someone far away.
Some people never enter our rooms, yet somehow change the way we see the entire world.

    Until the Ghost Becomes You
    Poetry by Rowan Evans

I sit in an empty room
just me and the ghost of you,
only light is the flickering candle,
casting shadows that flicker just the same—

It’s weird how you haunt a room,
    you never walked into—
while I sit lost in the absence
    you couldn’t have left behind.

You’ve never been in this space,
but I still see you all over the place—
I see your influence everywhere I look,
and there’s a simple reason why—

    because knowing you changed me.

It changed the way I see the world—
helped me look more out, less in.
It was one of many lessons learned,
and I had the foundation laid—
    long before you came,
    but since knowing you
    I’ve noticed greater change.

You’ve made me want to be better,
    not because you did anything
    or asked me to change—
    it’s simply because
I want to be there for you better.

    Even from a distance
I try and make a difference,
to be a shoulder you can lean on—
    to be a safe place,
where you can lay down the weight.

    And I promise you,
    one day in the future
    I will take this room
with just the ghost of you—
and I will trade it in
    for a different room,
    one with you and I—
    not just ghosts
    but presence too.
